Outdoor Living

Custom Deck Builder in Boulder CO That Builds Outdoor Spaces Worth Living In

Outdoor Living Spaces Built for How Colorado Feels Outside

Cosman Construction is Boulder County's boutique deck builder and outdoor living specialist — led by Alex Cosman, who is on every project from the first conversation through the final walkthrough.

We design and build custom decks, covered outdoor spaces, roof structures, and fully integrated exterior environments using materials chosen for Colorado's climate — including Deckorators Voyage and Summit Mineral Based Composite, Fortress Steel Framing Systems, and composite decking options compliant with Boulder County's Wildland Urban Interface requirements.

We build complete outdoor living systems — deck surfaces, railing, lighting, waterproofing, covered structures, and exterior transitions — so your finished space functions as a true extension of your home. Every project starts with a detailed design and real estimate before any work begins.

Homeowners across Boulder, Erie, Lafayette, Louisville, and the surrounding Front Range have trusted us with their outdoor spaces — and the majority come back when it's time for the next phase. If you're ready to build something worth using, reach out to schedule a conversation with Alex.

What We Build

Is Your Deck WUI Compliant? Fire-Resistant Decking in Boulder County

Boulder County's Wildland Urban Interface designation affects every deck built in affected zones — and the material requirement is straightforward: composite decking is required, not wood. Getting it wrong means a failed inspection or real liability exposure.

Most of Boulder County's WUI requirements are satisfied by any quality composite decking product. What goes beneath the surface matters just as much — Fortress Steel Framing Systems carry a Class A structural and fire resistance rating, meaning your deck's substructure meets the highest available standard for both fire resistance and long-term durability.

We handle the compliance research on every applicable project and tell you upfront what your property requires before design begins.

Why Hire a Design-Build Company for Your Outdoor Living Project

Most outdoor living projects above a certain scope require more than a contractor — they require design drawings for permitting, structural engineering for load calculations, and in some cases civil engineering for site grading or drainage. Hiring and coordinating those professionals separately puts the burden on the homeowner before a single board is cut.

With Cosman Construction, that coordination is handled for you. We work directly with architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, and interior designers as needed — assembling the right team for your specific project and managing every professional relationship under one contract so nothing gets lost between the design and the build.

Built to Last in Colorado

Colorado is harder on outdoor materials than most homeowners expect — and harder than most product warranties are honest about.

Colorado's UV radiation at altitude, hard freeze cycles, rapid temperature swings, and hail exposure create conditions that low-grade decking and framing systems simply aren't built for. Deckorators Voyage and Summit composites are limestone-based and dimensionally stable through temperature extremes.

Fortress Steel Framing eliminates the rot, warp, and insect vulnerability that eventually compromises wood substructures. A deck built the way we build them holds its performance and appearance for decades.

Your Outdoor Living Project Starts With a Plan

The right outdoor living space doesn't happen by accident — it happens because the right decisions were made before the first board was cut. Our process is built around one principle: nothing gets built until everything is decided.

Step 1: Consultation & Design

We start on your property, looking at the actual space. Alex assesses site conditions, sun orientation, snow load exposure, soil stability, and WUI compliance requirements before any design decisions are made. From there we produce a full design with material specifications and a real estimate — so you know what you're getting into before we break ground.

Step 2: Project Begins

Work begins on a defined schedule with phase milestones — demo if needed, framing, decking, railing, structures, and finish details — each with a target date. Alex is on-site and reachable throughout, and any change that affects timeline or cost gets communicated before it affects the project.

Step 3: Project Completion

Alex walks the finished space against the original design scope — every surface, every railing connection, every detail. Anything that doesn't meet standard is corrected before your walkthrough. Permits closed, inspections handled. We're done when there's nothing left on the list.

A note on the design phase: You're not locked into completing construction with us. If you take the design we've produced and work with another contractor for the build, that's completely your call. If you choose to move forward with us, the design fee is credited toward the project cost.

The Cosman Construction Difference

Most deck companies in Boulder County build decks. We build outdoor living environments — and there's a real difference between the two.

Every outdoor project is planned as a complete system before any of it gets built. Deck surface, railing, covered structure, lighting, finish details — all decided together, not figured out trade by trade as the project moves along.

Alex is on every project. Not checking in — present. The person who designed your space is the same person building it, which keeps communication simple and quality consistent.

If you're planning an outdoor living space in Boulder County and want it done right the first time, we'd like to hear about it. We look forward to speaking with 303.775.6690
